Proper Treatment For Coughs Is Important

When you have common flu, you are often afflicted with painful cough and sore throat. These symptoms should not be ignored and one must seek medical advice immediately and get these treated accordingly.

The defence mechanism of the body causes coughs to clear the passage of air in the throat which prevents appropriate air flow to the lungs. They not only happen due to physical problems and ailments but also can be triggered because of psychological problems. Cough caused due to physical problems are generally either allergic in nature, triggered by external pollutants or other influences, or a symptom of some ailment the person is suffering from. The latter is a habit of coughing or sneezing in a person without any concrete physical reason, and it is called ‘habitual coughing’ or Streruphilia in medical terminology.

Cough can sometimes be chronic or even acute, and can have an identifiable nature which depends on the duration and the intensity of coughing attacks. Painful and recurrent coughs which stay for not more than three weeks can be due to contagious as well as non-contagious ailments. Conditions such as pneumonia and sinusitis result in acute coughing while chronic diseases like asthma cause chronic coughs.

In order to make sure that you get proper treatment for your cough problem, you need to visit a doctor to identify the nature and cause of the complication. Antibiotics, Antihistamines and cough suppressants are a few of the medications usually prescribed by the doctors to provide relief from acute coughs. However, chronic coughs might need the sufferer to resort to prolonged therapies, which can go on for months at a stretch until the problem is alleviated.

As with any other medical condition, prevention of cough is much better than having to deal with it later when you become badly affected by it. Keeping away from smoking, exercising daily and eating a balanced diet that builds immunity and improves overall health can help prevent coughs.
